MSc in Medical Entomology & Applied Parasitology

The Programme in Master of Science Degree in Medical Entomology and Applied Parasitology is designed for biologists, veterinarians and medical personnel who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in a comprehensive range of aspects covering Medical Entomology and Parasitology. This programme consists of a broad range of modules that cater to persons currently engaged or seeking careers in health-related public and private sectors, research, academia and further postgraduate study.

The programme is designed to meet the growing need to develop knowledge and skills in vector-borne disease control and vector control. These areas of study are important since life-threatening vector-borne diseases like Dengue, Malaria and JE, still continue to be a major public health concern throughout the world despite all efforts to control their transmission.

Aims

• Enable personnel employed in the health sectors to obtain specialized knowledge in fields related to vectors, pathogens and their control.
• Expand the opportunities for postgraduate studies in the field of Medical Entomology and Applied Parasitology and facilitate careers in the health sector.
• Promote research in areas relevant to Medical Entomology and Applied Parasitology.

Programme Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate advanced theoretical and practical knowledge on current vector-borne diseases with respect to their causative pathogens, vectors of diseases, epidemiology, public health issues, social factors and disease control strategies.
• Analyse vector-borne disease issues by applying relevant laboratory and field techniques and finding sustainable solutions.
• Demonstrate abilities to gather in-depth knowledge in any area of specialization and to logically present findings in written and oral form.
• Work effectively within teams of experts, the general public and other relevant stakeholders to create a positive change towards the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases.
• Contribute to the development of new knowledge in relevant areas of specialization by conducting independent and pure research studies.
• Communication-Disseminate research outcomes to a variety of audiences using well developed written and oral communication skills.
• Attitudes, values, professionalism and Lifelong learning – Exhibit professionalism in dealing with different aspects of vector-borne disease control

Admission

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science (Biological Sciences) from a recognized university, or

• Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science from a recognized university, or

• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from a recognized university, or

• An equivalent or higher professional qualification acceptable to the OUSL Senate.

Fees can be paid in instalments.

Those who fail in the examination are required to re-registration and to pay for courses which they have repeated
